Abstract
I propose a general approach to defining bank and thrift product markets. I estimate two models of endogenous market structure: one assumes that banks and thrifts belong to “independent product markets” and the other assumes that they are “perfect strategic substitutes.” I transform one of the likelihoods in order to test between models and find support for the “perfect strategic substitutes” hypothesis.
