Abstract :
Fiber reinforced prismatic shafts subject to antiplane shear are considered. The bonding between matrix and ®ber may be perfect, imperfect, or sti€. The geometric criterion, that determines, when the e€ects of the interfacial bond overcome the elastic properties of the ®ber reinforcement, is found. This criterion is general and applies to any ®ber cross-section. It is given in terms of the surface traction to bulk stress quotient of the ®ber cross-section. This parameter is a measure of the ®berʹs response to anti-plane shear. New mathematically rigorous guidelines are presented for the design of ®ber reinforced shafts when the ®ber diameters, the material properties of the ®bers, and the degree of ®ber bonding to the matrix are known statistically
