Abstract :
Despite its proven value in the management of patients with palpable breast lesions, some surgeons treat patients without access to mammography. The aim of this study was to assess the role of mammography in planning the management of 82 patients with a solid, palpable breast lesion. A management plan, based on clinical findings, was formulated at the initial clinic visit, before mammography. The initial plan was shown to be appropriate for 65% of patients. A subsequent change in management plan was attributed wholly or partly to the mammographic findings in 20% of patients. Our results confirm that mammography plays a vital role in the management of palpable breast lesions.
