Abstract :
The present study was undertaken to assess ballet majorsʹ personality characteristics using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). Twenty-two ballet majors at a large Midwestern university with an accredited ballet program were administered the MMPI-2. Profiles were examined for a group mean, median, and standard deviation. The ballet majorsʹ mean profile was found to be one standard deviation above the mean on three scales (7-Pt, 1-Hs, 8-Sc). The groupʹs mean profile was then correlated with MMPI-2 profiles finding a 0.74 Pearson r correlation with adults having anorexia nervosa, 0.94 correlation with bulimic university students, 0.68 with people diagnosed as having obsessive compulsive disorders, and an 0.82 correlation with drug and alcohol addicts. Three basic content scales (2-D, 6-Pa, 0-Si) were found to have an inverted bell curve indicating two distinct populations within the ballet majors.
