Abstract :
Although the personality-motivation link has been studied previously, this literature has largely overlooked goal orientation. Using a field sample, this study explored the linkages between the five-factor model of personality and goal orientation. Results indicated that the “Big Two” (Extraversion and Neuroticism) were important correlates of goal orientation. Specifically, Extraversion was significantly related to learning goal orientation and proving goal orientation. Neuroticism was marginally related to proving goal orientation and significantly related to avoiding goal orientation. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.
