Abstract
Aim: To study our local experience in the management of Spontaneous Intracerebral Haematomas, in the light of the controversy between surgical and medical treatment. To review the literature on the subject.
Methods: 25 patients who were admitted to our center during a one year period were studied with regard to age, sex, main clinical features, CT findings and outcome of treatment.
Main Results: There was a male predominance, 16 (64%) of the cases were in the fourth and fifth decades, 19 (76%) presented in Coma, 15 (60%) were hypertensive on admission. Mortality for medically treated patients was 8 (50%), while 5 (55%) was obtained in surgically treated patients.
Conclusions: There was no significant difference between medical and surgical treatment of intracerebral haematomas. There is a need for establishing definite criteria for those cases that will benefit from surgical treatment.
