Approaches that allow global analysis of cell transcriptomes are greatly accelerating the dissection of lymphocyte signaling. Using serial analysis of gene expression, a recent study has provided evidence that most plasma membrane proteins of T cells have now been identified. Is this also true for the proteins governing intracellular signaling circuitries? This article comments on the recent study and describes other high-throughput screenings aimed at identifying and functionally characterizing signaling proteins.
