The use of a photodiode for measuring soil-water content by γ-ray attenuation

A commercial PIN silicon photodiode was tested as detector for soil water-content measurements by the γ-ray attenuation method. The results indicate that the portable photodiode is adequate for this application and can replace the more complicated and expensive method of NaI(TI) scintillation detection.
