Velocity profile measurements with labelled single particles

This paper describes experiments aimed at measuring and characterising the velocity profile of particles moving down vertical pipes using the technique of successive single particle injections. This was done to investigate the conditions under which an acoustic method of measuring velocities of particulate materials differed from the expected result. A good correlation was observed between the velocity differences and deviations from a plug flow regime near the wall of the pipe.
