Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis of bulk concrete samples with an Am–Be neutron source

A 185 Gbq (5 Ci)radioisotope neutron source, has been used in conjunction with a coaxial HP(Ge) detector for the bulk elemental analysis of concrete by neutron capture. The prompt γ-ray neutron activation technique permits the measurement of the Ca/Si concentration ratio. The results were checked by comparison with chemically determined values. A simple model, then permits determination of the proportion of cement in the concrete.
