Abstract :
We demonstrate spatially localized immobilization of protein molecules on high-density poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) coated Si(1 1 1). Patterns of HO- and CH3O-terminated PEG regions are formed on silicon surfaces based on soft lithography techniques and an efficient reaction between alcohol functional groups and chlorine-terminated silicon. Activation of the HO-terminated PEG brush is achieved via either partial oxidation to form aldehyde groups or via attachment of efficient leaving groups. Protein molecules are covalently immobilized to these activated regions on the PEG/Si surface.
