Synthesis of heteroaryl pyridone methine dyes

The synthesis of furyl, thienyl and indole methine dyes derived from N-substituted-3cyano-4-methyl-6-hydroxyl-2-pyridones has been achieved by condensation of pyridones with heteroaryl aldehydes. In addition, 5-amino-3-cyano-4-methyl-6hydroxyl-1-ethyl-2-pyridone was synthesized and nitrosated to give an azamethine dye. The absorption properties of these novel cyanine dyes were investigated in various solvents.
