The design and implementation of a MOO

Although the existing literature provides numerous examples of text-based virtual environments (MUDs and MOOs), there are no papers describing their design and implementation. This article fills this gap by explaining MUM (Multi-Universe MOO), an innovative event-driven MOO with multiple interconnected universes. Among MUMʹs notable features are the use of servers and metaservers to manage the multiple universes, purely event-driven operation, and off-loading of universe servers by performing as much275 275processing on clients as possible.
