Popliteal aneurysms: controversies in their management

Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAs) occur in older men with significant comorbidity and limited life expectancy. This needs to be remembered when planning elective operation for asymptomatic aneurysms. In the absence of significant distortion PAs <3 cm in diameter can be managed by sequential ultrasound scanning. Their rate of thrombosis is no worse than that of grafts after elective bypass.
