Abstract
Purpoe:
To determine the prevalence of cytomegaloviru retiniti after cardiac tranplantation.
Method:
Record of patient who had cardiac tranplantation at Jackon Memorial Hopital between November 1986 and November 1994 were reviewed. Patient who had not previouly had ophthalmic evaluation after tranplantation were invited for retinal examination.
Reult:
Eighty-two patient had cardiac tranplantation during the tudy period. One to 68 month (mean, 24.5 month) after tranplantation, ophthalmocopic examination wa performed in 41 patient. ix (14.6%) of 41 patient had healed car conitent with cytomegaloviru retiniti or active cytomegaloviru retiniti.
Concluion:
Cytomegaloviru retiniti leion were found in ix (14.6%) of 41 patient. If remaining patient were unaffected and no patient developed cytomegaloviru retiniti after ophthalmocopic examination, the prevalence would be 7.3% (6/82). We recommend ophthalmic creening of all patient 3 to 4 month after cardiac tranplantation with repeat examination yearly or a ocular ymptom occur.
