Abstract :
Purpoe To report uveiti aociated with human immunodeficiency viru (HIV) infection and to ugget guideline for treatment. Method ix HIV-eropoitive patient (10 eye) with anterior or poterior uveiti or both were evaluated. After ineffective prolonged treatment with ytemic and topical corticoteroid, pecific ytemic antiretroviral therapy with zidovudine wa initiated in all patient. Aqueou humor wa cultured in three eye of three patient, and vitreou humor wa cultured in one eye of one patient. Reult In all 10 eye of ix patient, there wa reolution of inflammation in 10 to 42 day after commencement of treatment with zidovudine (600 to 800 mg/day), depite no or minimal repone to corticoteroid. Culture of aqueou humor from three eye of three patient and culture of vitreou humor from one eye of one patient were poitive for HIV; no other organim wa iolated. ytemic evaluation dicloed no other identifiable caue for the uveiti in any patient. Concluion Infection with HIV appear to be a caue of uveiti. A trial of zidovudine may be warranted in HIV-eropoitive patient with uveiti that i poorly reponive to cortico-teroid treatment when no other caue i identified. The efficacy of other retroviral agent wa not determined.
