Tranlocation of the Retina for Management of ubfoveal Choroidal Neovacularization I: Experimental tudie in the Rabbit Eye Original Reearch Article

Purpoe: To report a urgical method for retinal tranlocation a a potential treatment for eye with ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization. Method: Thirty right eye of 30 pigmented rabbit were ued for thi tudy. The firt 15 were ued to develop the technique. The complete urgical technique for retinal tranlocation wa performed in the lat conecutive 15 rabbit. Intravitreal injection of ulfur hexafluoride wa performed to compre and liquefy the vitreou. Two week later, we ued trancleral ubretinal hydrodiection to create a retinal detachment. A cleral reection wa then performed near the equator in the uperotemporal quadrant. Fundu photograph were taken to record the retinal tatu before, immediately after, and 1, 3, and 7 day after urgery. Electroretinography wa performed in three rabbit 3, 7, and 14 day after retinal tranlocation. Hitologic tudie were performed in one rabbit 7 day after retinal tranlocation. Reult: Our reult are baed on experiment performed in the lat conecutive 15 rabbit. One day after urgery, retinal reattachment wa oberved in 14 of the 15 animal. The remaining animal developed endophthalmiti. A predictable retinal tranlocation of about 1,000 μm wa achieved. Retinal tear were noted on the retinal fold in four cae after 1 week. Electroretinographic tudie howed tranient reduction in retinal function. Mild morphologic damage to the outer retinal layer wa een hitologically. Retinal detachment or proliferative vitreoretinopathy did not develop in any rabbit in the 14 day of follow-up. Concluion: Limited retinal tranlocation with repoitioning of the central retina wa accomplihed in rabbit.
