Abstract :
Purpoe: ubmacular urgery i under invetigation for the treatment of ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization econdary to age-related macular degeneration, ocular hitoplamoi yndrome, and other caue. The aim of thi tudy were to determine whether the macular area from which choroidal neovacularization wa removed urgically remained functional and whether there wa any qualitative difference between eye with different dieae condition or between eye of younger and older patient.
Method: Our tudy included 19 patient (19 eye) with choroidal neovacularization, even cae caued by age-related macular degeneration and 12 caued by ocular hitoplamoi yndrome, pathologic myopia, or idiopathic caue. All tet were performed at leat 6 month after urgical removal of choroidal neovacularization. All patient underwent fundu perimetry with the canning laer ophthalmocope for evaluation of dene and relative cotoma and fixation ite.
Reult: After ubmacular urgery in 19 patient, 10 patient (one with age-related macular degeneration and nine with pathologic myopia, ocular hitoplamoi yndrome, or an idiopathic caue of choroidal neovacularization) fixated within an area that ophthalmocopically and angiographically wa an area of retinal pigment epithelial diturbance occupied by choroidal neovacularization preoperatively. Of 12 patient without age-related macular degeneration, even of eight patient younger than 50 year of age compared with two of four patient 50 year or older fixated within the area of retinal pigment epithelial diturbance.
Concluion: Our data ugget that in patient without age-related macular degeneration who undergo ubmacular urgery, the urgically diturbed area previouly occupied by choroidal neovacularization can remain functional potoperatively. Furthermore, occaionally a patient with age-related macular degeneration undergoing ubmacular urgery till can fixate in the area from which the choroidal neovacularization wa removed.
