Abstract :
Purpoe: To demontrate the aociation between minocycline treatment and development of the peudotumor cerebri yndrome. Method: A retropective tudy wa conducted of 12 patient from five neuro-ophthalmic referral center who developed peudotumor cerebri yndrome after being treated with tandard doe of minocycline for refractory acne vulgari. The main outcome meaure included reolution of headache, tranient viual obcuration, diplopia, papilledema, and viual field tatic threhold after withdrawal of minocycline and treatment for increaed intracranial preure. Reult: Nine (75%) of the 12 patient developed ymptom of the peudotumor cerebri yndrome yndrome within 8 week of tarting minocycline therapy; ix were not obee. Two patient developed ymptom only after a year had elaped becaue of commencement of treatment with minocycline. One patient wa aymptomatic, and peudotumor cerebri yndrome wa diagnoed by finding papilledema on routine examination 1 year after minocycline wa tarted. None of the patient developed recurrence for at leat 1 year after the dicontinuation of minocycline and treatment for increaed intracranial preure, but three (25%) of the 12 patient had ubtantial reidual viual field lo. Concluion: Minocycline i a caue or precipitating factor in peudotumor cerebri yndrome. Although mot patient have prominent ymptom and are diagnoed promptly, other are aymptomatic and may have optic dik edema for a long period of time before diagnoi. Withdrawal of minocycline and treatment for increaed intracranial preure lead to reolution of the peudotumor cerebri yndrome, but viual field lo may perit.
