Peripheral retinal neovacularization (Eale dieae) aociated with the factor V Leiden mutation

Purpoe: To illutrate a cae of peripheral retinal neovacularization (Eale dieae) in a patient who teted poitive for the factor V Leiden mutation. Method: A 42–year–old woman had a 1-week hitory of blurred viion in her right eye. Her medical hitory wa remarkable for a cerebrovacular accident. Ophthalmocopy of the right eye dicloed a mild vitreou hemorrhage and a ridge of retinal neovacularization in the temporal periphery. The left fundu howed evidence of temporal retinal ichemia. A laboratory evaluation for hypercoagulability wa poitive for factor V Leiden mutation. Reult: Peripheral catter laer photocoagulation wa applied to the ichemic retina, and the neovacularization regreed. The patient began taking warfarin odium to prevent further thrombotic event. Concluion: A laboratory evaluation for coagulopathy, including the factor V Leiden mutation, hould be added to the examination of patient with Eale dieae, epecially individual with a hitory of a previou thrombotic event.
