Cataract aociation with pinguecula and pterygium: the blue mountain eye tudy

PURPOE: To determine aociation between cataract type and pinguecula and pterygium. METHOD: The Blue Mountain Eye tudy examined 3,654 peron aged 49 to 97 year near ydney, Autralia. A quetionnaire wa ued to collect information on cataract rik factor. lit-lamp examination recorded pinguecula and pterygium. Maked len photograph grading aeed cataract. REULT: Pinguecula, found in 2,418 right eye and 2,437 left eye, wa tatitically ignificantly aociated with cortical cataract (odd ratio [OR] = 1.40) after multivariate adjutment. Pterygium, found in 199 right eye and 188 left eye, wa aociated with poterior ubcapular cataract (OR = 1.90). CONCLUION: Aociation were found between cataract and the preence of either pinguecula or pterygium. Thee finding provide indirect upport for Watermen tudy finding, which link ultraviolet radiation to cataract.
