Abstract :
PURPOE: To decribe the clinical appearance of factitiou (or elf-inflicted) leion on periocular kin and face.
METHOD: All patient with factitiou cutaneou dieae who were examined at Mayo Clinic, Rocheter, Minneota, between 1985 and 1997 were identified. For patient with leion on the face and periocular kin, the demographic feature, clinical decriptive characteritic of their leion, aociated pychopathology, and treatment were acertained.
REULT: Of 38 patient with factitiou dermatiti, 18 (47%) had facial leion. Of thee 18 patient, 15 (83%) were female. The mean age (± D) of the patient with facial leion wa 35.2 ± 15.7 year (range, 9 to 66 year). Eight patient (44%) had neurotic excoriation, nine (50%) had dermatiti artefacta, and one (6%) had trichotillomania. The working diagnoe of five patient cared for initially in the Department of Ophthalmology were corneal epithelial and facial dequamation aociated with evere pain of unknown caue, medial cicatricial ectropion of probable vaculitic caue, baal cell carcinoma of the naojugal fold, recurrent preeptal celluliti reitant to medical treatment, and madaroi of the upper eyelid of unknown caue.
CONCLUION: Cutaneou factitiou dieae may maquerade a numerou clinical entitie and hould be included in the differential diagnoi of leion of the periocular kin.
