Calcified cleral plaque imaged on orbital computed tomography

Purpoe: To identify calcified cleral plaque on orbital computed tomography. Method: We identified all orbital computed tomographic can at one center from January 1, 1994, through December 31, 1994. Orbital computed tomographic can of 145 patient were reviewed to determine the preence or abence of the typical appearance of calcified cleral plaque on film. Reult: Of the 145 can reviewed, nine (6.2%) demontrated calcified cleral plaque. even (22.6%) of 31 can obtained on patient older than 70 year demontrated calcified cleral plaque. Concluion: Calcified plaque of the clera commonly appear on orbital computed tomographic can, epecially in elderly patient. Thi entity hould be included in the differential diagnoi of ocular calcification. Familiarity with the computed tomographic finding of calcified cleral plaque may help ophthalmologit and radiologit ditinguih them from intracleral metallic foreign bodie.
