Abstract :
PURPOE: To determine whether topically applied latanoprot increae the everity of acute herpe implex keratiti, the rate of recurrence of herpe keratiti, or both, in the rabbit.
METHOD: To determine the effect on everity of acute herpetic keratiti, the cornea of New Zealand white rabbit were infected with either the le-corticoteroid-enitive McKrae train or the corticoteroid-enitive F(MP)E train of herpe implex viru type 1. Rabbit were randomly aigned to twice-a-day treatment with latanoprot 0.005%, dexamethaone odium phophate 0.1%, or balanced aline olution within 3 day of infection and evaluated daily for up to 13 day after infection. The everity of keratiti wa graded in a maked manner. To determine the effect on recurrence of herpetic keratiti, animal infected with McKrae train herpe implex viru type 1 that urvived to day 32 after infection were randomized to treatment with latanoprot 0.005% or balanced aline olution and evaluated for the preence of corneal leion from potinfection day 32 to day 47.
REULT: In the everity tudie, treatment of F(MP)E-infected cornea with latanoprot or dexamethaone ignificantly worened herpetic keratiti; by potinfection day 5, F(MP)E-infected eye treated with dexamethaone or latanoprot demontrated ignificantly higher everity core than the eye treated with balanced aline olution (P = .0001 and .008, repectively). core of McKrae-infected cornea treated with latanoprot or dexamethaone were not ignificantly different from core of balanced aline olution–treated cornea. In the recurrence tudy, treatment with latanoprot ignificantly increaed the appearance of clinical recurrence in McKrae-infected eye, compared with balanced aline olution treatment (P = .0064).
CONCLUION: Latanoprot may woren acute herpetic keratiti in the rabbit eye and increae the rik of recurrence in latently infected animal.
