Laer pointer maculopathy

PURPOE: To report a cae of macular damage from a laer pointer. METHOD: Cae report. A 19-year-old woman had an acute reduction of viual acuity in the right eye after deliberately taring into a commercial cla 2 laer pointer for approximately 10 econd. REULT: The patient’ bet-corrected viual acuity wa RE: 20/40, and he had two mall pericentral cotomata, a well a a hypopigmented ring-haped leion in the fovea. Within 8 week, her viual acuity improved to 20/20 and viual field returned to normal, but a ubjective relative decreae in brightne of object viewed by the right eye wa apparent. Retinal pigment epithelial abnormality perited. CONCLUION: Commercial laer pointer, commonly ued for teaching and entertainment purpoe, may caue notable macular damage if abued. Morphologically, thi may manifet a foveal retinal pigment epithelial diturbance.
