%PURPOE: To report the viual outcome of urgical treatment of ubmacular hemorrhage aociated with idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vaculopathy. METHOD: Eight eye of eight conecutive patient with thick ubmacular hemorrhage aociated with idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vaculopathy were treated with par plana vitrectomy and tiue plaminogen activator–aited removal of ubretinal blood (December 1995 to eptember 1997) or intravitreal 100% ulfur hexafluoride ga injection without tiue plaminogen activator (October 1997 to March 1998). REULT: Potoperatively, laer treatment wa performed for active polypoidal leion outide the foveal avacular zone in four eye. A retinal pigment epithelial tear wa een outide the foveal avacular zone in three eye, and one eye developed a retinal detachment. The bet-corrected viual acuity improved (by 3 or more line) or tabilized in even of the eight eye. Four eye had a final bet-corrected viual acuity of 20/40 or better, and three eye had a final bet-corrected viual acuity of 20/50 to 20/200. In one eye, the viual acuity decreaed from 20/100 to 20/500 becaue of the development of a ubfoveal neovacular membrane. The membrane wa excied, and hitologic examination howed fibrovacular tiue between the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (type 2 pattern). CONCLUION: urgical intervention may be of benefit in eye with ubmacular hemorrhage aociated with idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vaculopathy.
