Abstract :
PURPOE: To identify the frequency of recently acquired v chronic ytemic Toxoplama gondii infection in patient with ocular toxoplamoi. METHOD: erum ample from 22 patient with primary ocular toxoplamoi (not from car) and 42 patient with recurrent ocular toxoplamoi were teted for the preence of anti–T. gondii IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodie and compared with ample from 24 patient with other caue of uveiti. Intraocular production of anti–T. gondii IgG and IgA, and the preence of T. gondii DNA wa determined in patient and control ubject from whom ocular fluid wa available. Abtract REULT: erologic evidence of recently acquired infection wa found for 11 (50%) of 22 patient with primary ocular toxoplamoi and for one (2%) of 42 with recurrent ocular toxoplamoi. In the uveiti control group, anti–T. gondii IgM antibodie could be detected in two (8%) of 24 patient, but anti–T. gondii IgA antibodie were not detectable. Patient with primary ocular toxoplamoi and erologic marker of recently acquired ytemic infection were ignificantly older than thoe with chronic infection (P = .008). Intraocular production of anti–T. gondii IgG wa more frequently noted in patient with recurrent than primary ocular toxoplamoi (81% v 41%; P < .001), but intraocular T. gondii DNA wa more frequently found in patient with primary ocular toxoplamoi than in thoe with recurrent ocular toxoplamoi (37% v 4%; P < .01). CONCLUION: Primary ocular toxoplamoi can be een in either recently acquired or chronic T. gondii infection. Patient with ocular dieae and recently acquired infection were older and more likely to have T. gondii DNA in intraocular fluid.
