Long-term follow-up of trabeculectomy without antimetabolite in patient with uveiti Original Reearch Article

PURPOE: To determine the long-term ucce rate after trabeculectomy without antimetabolite in patient with uveiti. METHOD: Review of data from all patient with uveiti who underwent trabeculectomy for uncontrolled intraocular preure econdary to intraocular inflammation between May 1990 and December 1994. Reult were compared with thoe from a group of patient with primary open-angle glaucoma matched for ex and urgeon. REULT: The uveiti group conited of 32 eye (20 patient). Maximum control of intraocular inflammation wa achieved for a minimum of 2 month before urgery. Mean (± D) age wa 40.0 ± 12.5 year (range, 14 to 67 year), with a median (± E) follow-up of 53.0 ± 1.8 month (range, 33 to 84 month). The primary open-angle glaucoma group conited of 33 eye (23 patient), with a mean age of 62.0 ± 13.7 year (range, 26 to 81 year) and a median follow-up of 63.0 ± 12.0 month (range, 34 to 299 month). The overall 5-year ucce rate (intraocular preure ≤ 21 mm Hg with or without topical medication) for the uveiti group wa 78% compared with 82% for the primary open-angle glaucoma group (P = .7). The abolute 5-year ucce rate (intraocular preure ≤ 21 mm Hg with no medication) for the uveiti group wa 53% compared with 67% for the primary open-angle glaucoma group (P = .87). CONCLUION: In the abence of other rik factor, uch a Afro-Caribbean race and previou intraocular urgery, and with adequate preoperative control of inflammation, trabeculectomy without antimetabolite may be conidered the primary urgical procedure for increaed intraocular preure in patient with uveiti.
