Emerging ciprofloxacin-reitant Peudomona aeruginoa

PURPOE: To report a clinical erie of ciprofloxacin-reitant ocular iolate of Peudomona aeruginoa from a tertiary care ophthalmic center. METHOD: Review of in vitro enitivitie of all ocular iolate of P. aeruginoa between July 1991 and eptember 1998. In vitro reitance wa defined a a minimum inhibitory concentration of 4 or more μg per ml. REULT: Nine of 423 ocular iolate of P. aeruginoa howed in vitro reitance to ciprofloxacin. From 1991 to 1994, 0.44% (1/227) of ocular iolate were reitant to ciprofloxacin, wherea from 1995 to 1998, 4.1% (8/196) of ocular iolate howed in vitro reitance (P = .014). CONCLUION: Ciprofloxacin-reitant P. aeruginoa ha been identified in recent clinical ocular pecimen. Ciprofloxacin reitance among ocular iolate of P. aeruginoa i a local and worldwide concern.
