Abstract :
PURPOE: To invetigate two cae of elective impairment of motion perception (akinetopia) induced by toxicity from the antidepreant nefazodone, a new drug that block erotonin reuptake and antagonize 5-HT2 receptor.
METHOD: Cae report.
REULT: A 47-year-old man receiving nefazodone (erzone; Britol-Meyer quibb, New York, N.Y.) (100 mg twice daily), reported a bizarre derangement of motion perception. Moving object were followed by a trail of multiple “freeze-frame” image, which diipated promptly when motion ceaed. A 48-year-old woman receiving nefazodone (400 mg daily at bedtime) reported a imilar phenomenon, with viual trail following moving object. In both patient, viion returned to normal after the doage of nefazodone wa reduced or eliminated.
CONCLUION: Nefazodone toxicity can reult in akinetopia, characterized by the inability to perceive motion in a normal, mooth fahion; peritence of multiple, trobelike image; and viual trail behind moving object. In thi rare yndrome, tationary element are perceived normally, indicating that nefazodone caue elective impairment of pathway involved in motion proceing in the viual ytem.
