Abstract :
PURPOE: To evaluate the interval between removal of intraocular ilicone oil tamponade and retinal redetachment after par plana vitrectomy, and to invetigate factor influencing the length of the interval. PATIENT AND METHOD: The retropective tudy included 42 eye of 42 conecutive patient who experienced a retinal redetachment after ilicone oil had been removed 8.0 ± 6.2 month after an initial par plana vitrectomy including intraocular ilicone oil (5,000 centitoke) tamponade. Par plana vitrectomy had been performed for proliferative vitreoretinopathy caued by complicated rhegmatogenou retinal detachment. REULT: The retina redetached 2 day to 5.5 month after ilicone oil removal (mean ± D, 1.3 ± 1.4 month; median, 18 day). Thirteen (30%) of all 42 redetachment occurred in the firt 9 day, 21 (50%) of all 42 retinal redetachment occurred in the firt 18 day, and 32 (75%) of all 42 retinal redetachment occurred in the firt 50 day. The interval between ilicone oil removal and retinal redetachment wa tatitically (by analyi of variance) independent of the method of ilicone removal (tranpupillary drainage v via par plana clerotomie), refractive error of the eye (P = .62), time between initial par plana vitrectomy and ilicone oil removal (P = .99), viual acuity before ilicone oil removal (P = .26), type of anetheia (P = .69), gender (P = .80), and age (P = .48) of the patient. CONCLUION: The rik of retinal redetachment decreae teeply with increaing time after ilicone oil removal. Three to 5 month after oil removal, retinal redetachment become unlikely. The time of retinal redetachment i tatitically independent of the method of ilicone oil removal, refractive error, time between the preceding par plana vitrectomy and ilicone oil removal, viual acuity before ilicone oil removal, type of anetheia, and gender and age of the patent. Thee data may be important for cheduling reexamination and for couneling patient in their planned activitie after removal of intraocular ilicone oil tamponade.
