PURPOE: To quantitate the relationhip of total choleterol and high-denity lipoprotein choleterol to the incidence and progreion of diabetic retinopathy and macular edema 5 year later in thoe with younger-onet diabete of long duration. METHOD: Caual erum pecimen for lipid value and fundu photography at the time of the lipid determination were evaluated with regard to retinal leion in photograph taken 5 year later during the coure of a population-baed cohort tudy. REULT: Univariable aociation were ignificant for aociation of incident retinal leion with total choleterol/high-denity lipoprotein choleterol, but multivariable aociation conidering covariate were not ignificant. CONCLUION: Our data ugget that lowering choleterol by therapeutic mean may not be indicated for the ole purpoe of decreaing the incidence or progreion of thee retinal leion.
