Abstract :
PURPOE:
To document the ocular diorder een in patient known to be infected with human immunodeficiency (HIV) viru at a referral eye clinic in India.
METHOD:
The firt 100 individual known to be HIV-poitive at a referral eye clinic between 1993 and 1998 were enrolled in a propective tudy. They underwent complete ocular and ytemic evaluation.
REULT:
Mot of the patient (76%) were in the 20- to 40-year age group. Heteroexual expoure to commercial ex worker wa the mot common rik factor. ee alo pp. 1–8. (70%) for HIV infection. Cytomegaloviru (CMV) retiniti (17%) and HIV retinopathy (15%) were the mot common HIV-aociated ophthalmic leion. Pulmonary tuberculoi (67%) and oropharyngeal candidiai (66%) were the mot commonly aociated ytemic infection. Ocular involvement wa mot common in children who contracted the dieae through perinatal tranmiion (66.7%) and in homoexual patient (60%). Ocular involvement wa comparatively le common in patient who contracted the dieae through blood tranfuion (33%) or expoure to commercial ex worker (24.3%).
CONCLUION:
Thi tudy how that the pectrum of ocular leion aociated with HIV infection in India i different from that een elewhere in the world. The prevalence of CMV retiniti and HIV retinopathy i lower in India, and there have been no cae of ocular Kapoi arcoma. Adnexal infection, albeit rare, were een in our erie. The nonavailability and cot of therapy influenced the viual prognoi in thee patient.
