Abstract :
PURPOE: To ae the relationhip of apirin ue and ichemic cranial nerve palie among patient with diabete mellitu and hypertenion. METHOD: Thi retropective cae-control tudy involved 100 patient with ichemic cranial nerve palie in aociation with diabete, hypertenion, or both (paly cae) and 163 age-matched and ex-matched patient with diabete, hypertenion, or both but without ichemic cranial nerve palie (nonpaly control ubject). Comparion were made with repect to duration of diabete, doe and duration of apirin ue, doe and duration of tobacco ue, and preence of cardiac or cerebrovacular dieae. REULT: There were 20 oculomotor, 33 trochlear, 37 abducen, and 10 facial nerve paly cae. The median duration of diabete wa 6 year for cae and 7 year for control ubject. There were 34 cae (34%) who had ued apirin for a mean duration of 5.5 year before the onet of the cranial nerve paly and 49 control ubject (30.1%) who had ued apirin for a mean duration of 4.3 year. There were no ignificant difference between cae and control ubject for duration of diabete (P = .94); apirin ue (P = .51), duration (P = .50), and doage (P = .89); tobacco ue (P = .73) and conumption (P = .45); and proportion of cardiac dieae (P = .17). Cerebrovacular dieae wa ignificantly le common among paly cae than nonpaly control ubject (P< .001). There wa no ignificant difference in the odd of a patient having cranial nerve paly in the apirin group compared with the nonapirin group (odd ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval, 0.70–2.04). CONCLUION: Apirin ue wa not aociated with a reduced rate of ichemic third, fourth, ixth, and eventh nerve palie among patient with diabete mellitu and hypertenion. Apirin appear to be ineffective in preventing ichemic third, fourth, ixth, and eventh cranial nerve palie. Patient with ichemic cranial nerve paly have a ignificantly lower rate of troke and tranient ichemic attack than patient who have diabete or hypertenion but who do not have a hitory of cranial nerve paly.
