Peudoexfoliation yndrome in Autralian adult

PURPOE: To decribe the prevalence and correlate of peudoexfoliation yndrome in Autralian aged 40 year and older. METHOD: Cluter, tratified ampling wa employed to identify a cohort repreentative of the population of the tate of Victoria aged 40 year and older that included urban, rural, and nuring home reident. A tandardized peronal interview and clinical eye examination, including intraocular preure, were performed at locally etablihed tet ite. The preence of any peudoexfoliation material on the iri or len capule wa noted on dilated lit-lamp examination. Participant were claified a having peudoexfoliation yndrome if any peudoexfoliation material wa preent in either eye. Univariate analye with t tet and chi-quare were firt employed to evaluate rik factor for peudoexfoliation. Any factor with P < .10 were then fitted in a backward tepwie logitic regreion model. For the final multivariate model, P < .05 wa conidered tatitically ignificant. REULT: A total of 3,271 of the urban reident (83% of eligible), 403 nuring home reident (90% of eligible), and 1473 rural reident (92%) participated. The urban reident ranged in age from 40 to 98 year (mean = 59), and 1,511 (46%) were men. The nuring home reident ranged in age from 46 to 101 year (mean 82), and 85 (21%) were men. The rural reident ranged in age from 40 to 103 year (mean 60), and 701 (47.5%) were men. Participant with bilateral cataract extraction were excluded from further analye. The overall rate of peudoexfoliation yndrome in thi population wa 0.98% (95% confidence limit = 0.57, 1.28). The prevalence of peudoexfoliation material in either eye increaed ignificantly with age. No cae of peudoexfoliation yndrome were oberved in people aged 90 year and older. However, people with bilateral cataract urgery had been excluded from thee analye. After adjuting for age and cataract, only glaucoma remained ignificantly related to peudoexfoliation (odd ratio = 3.80, 95% confidence limit = 1.73, 8.33). DICUION: In concluion, we found only two trong correlate of peudoexfoliation in our population-baed ample of Victorian aged 40 year and older: age and glaucoma.
