PURPOE: To decribe a cae of pontaneou central retinal artery occluion in a young man with hemoglobin ickle cell dieae. METHOD: Cae report. REULT: A 31-year-old African-American man with a hitory of hemoglobin ickle cell dieae developed udden painle lo of viion in the right eye. Medical hitory wa remarkable for the recent hitory of a mild painful crii, but no other ytemic illne or contributing factor. Central retinal artery occluion wa diagnoed with retinal whitening, cherry red pot, and delayed arteriovenou tranit on fluorecein angiography. Over the enuing week, the patient had viual recovery to 20/60 in the abence of therapeutic intervention. CONCLUION: Central retinal artery occluion ha been reported in ickle cell hemoglobinopathie (ie, , -thal, ickle trait, and ickle cell), but the aociation with ickle cell dieae i rare. Mot report have decribed additional contributing factor, uch a trauma or concomitant ytemic illne, to help account for the central retinal artery occluion. The preent cae ugget that ickle cell dieae alone i ufficient for the development of central retinal artery occluion.
