Abstract :
PURPOE: To report a cae in which intravitreal ilicone oil migrated along the intracranial portion of the optic nerve and into the lateral ventricle of the brain after the repair of a retinal detachment econdary to cytomegaloviru retiniti. METHOD: A 42-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency yndrome (AID) developed a rhegmatogenou retinal detachment in hi left eye econdary to a cytomegaloviru infection of the retina. The detachment wa repaired uing 5000 c intraocular ilicone oil for a long-term tamponade. ubequently, the affected eye developed glaucoma, which wa poorly controlled. Fifteen month after the retinal urgery, he developed a peripheral neuropathy that wa thought to be AID related. Computed tomography and magnetic reonance imaging of the head were performed to invetigate the neuropathy. REULT: The patient wa found to have a foreign ubtance within hi lateral ventricle that hifted with poition and wa identical with repect to it imaging propertie to the remaining intraocular ilicone oil. Additional material wa found along the intracranial portion of hi optic nerve. CONCLUION: Under certain circumtance, intraocular ilicone oil may migrate out of the eye, along the intracranial portion of the optic nerve, and into the lateral ventricle of the brain
