Iri color and cataract: The Blue Mountain Eye tudy

PURPOE: To invetigate the relationhip between eye color and cataract. METHOD: A population-baed cro-ectional tudy (N = 3654) wa conducted near ydney, Autralia. Len photograph were graded for cortical, nuclear, and poterior ubcapular cataract. Iri color wa aeed at lit-lamp examination by comparion with four photographic tandard. REULT: Eye with dark brown irie were more likely to have nuclear (adjuted odd ratio, 1.59; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03 to 2.28) or poterior ubcapular cataract (adjuted odd ratio, 2.50; 95% CI, 1.57 to 3.98) than eye with lighter-colored irie. CONCLUION: People with dark brown eye are at increaed rik of cataract and hould be encouraged to protect their eye from direct expoure to unlight
