Abstract
PURPOE: To etimate frequency of elf-reported viual dyfunction in pecific life ituation.
METHOD: Performance-baed meaure of viual function were obtained during the 5-year follow-up examination of the Beaver Dam Eye tudy cohort. During the ubequent yearly follow-up telephone call, four quetion concerning viual abilitie in pecific ituation were adminitered.
REULT: Viual difficultie in everyday life ituation were commonly reported by adult aged 48 to 91 year, with only 17% to 35% of peron reporting excellent or very good viion in the four pecific ituation related to viual function. Viual acuity, near viion, and contrat enitivity meaure do not reflect the viual difficultie encountered in common daily activitie in our tudy population (pearman correlation coefficient all le than 0.35).
CONCLUION: A few imple quetion about viual function in common daily activitie may give a clinician inight into patient complaint. It may be that environmental change could improve elf-reported viual function.
