Abstract :
PURPOE: To tudy reult of 2-year follow-up of radiotherapy for ubfoveal choroidal neovacular membrane aociated with age-related macular degeneration.
METHOD: In a randomized propective clinical tudy, 101 patient received a low-doe radiotherapy or no treatment. In the treatment group, ubfoveal choroidal neovacular membrane were treated with 20 Gy of 6-MV photon to the macula of the affected eye.
REULT: The overall complete follow-up rate wa 84.2% (85/101). No meaurable treatment-related morbidity wa een during or after treatment. Mean change in log of minimal angle of reolution (logMAR) of viual acuity and area of choroidal neovacular membrane for 2-year follow-up were +0.226 ± 0.373 and 143.5 ± 53.1% in the treatment group, and +0.563 ± 0.370 and 190.3 ± 81.4% in the control group; a ignificant difference wa found (P < .0001; P = .0008). In patient with maller choroidal neovacular membrane (≤1.5 mm2) or better viual acuity (≥60/200) at baeline, the treatment group howed a ignificantly maller increae in area of choroidal neovacular membrane and a ignificantly maller decreae in LogMAR viual acuity for 2 year, wherea there wa no ignificant difference in patient with larger choroidal neovacular membrane (>1.5 mm2) or poorer viual acuity (<60/200).
CONCLUION: Radiotherapy appeared to have a favorable treatment effect in eye with ubfoveal neovacular membrane aociated with AMD. Favorable factor for radiotherapy were a maller area of choroidal neovacular membrane and better viual acuity.
