Abstract :
PURPOE: To report a randomized clinical trial of potoperative ubconjunctival injection of low-doe 5-fluorouracil in patient undergoing primary trabeculectomy.
METHOD: In a propective, randomized clinical trial, 40 eye of 40 patient were randomized to the low-doe 5-fluorouracil group and received three ubconjunctival injection of 5 mg each over 11 potoperative day, and 40 eye of 40 patient were randomized to trabeculectomy without 5-fluorouracil.
REULT: Mean (±D) preoperative and 1-year potoperative intraocular preure in the 5-fluorouracil group were 26.9 (±9.5) and 15.3 (±5.8) mm Hg, repectively. In the control group thee were 25.9 (±8.1) mm Hg, and 15.8 (±5.1) mm Hg, repectively. The patient who received 5-fluorouracil had a mean reduction in intraocular preure of 11.5 (±9.1) mm Hg at a median follow-up of 52.3 week. The control group had a mean reduction in intraocular preure of 10.2 (±8.7) mm Hg at a median follow-up of 52.6 week. Thee difference were not tatitically ignificant.
CONCLUION: Three potoperative ubconjunctival 5-fluorouracil injection of 5 mg each after trabeculectomy in eye at low rik for failure had no tatitically or clinically ignificant effect on reduction of intraocular preure with 1-year follow-up. Enhancement of ucce in thi group of patient may require a larger total doe of 5-fluorouracil.
