Abstract :
PURPOE: To report the ocular complication aociated with the limited macular tranlocation procedure.
METHOD: Retropective review of 153 conecutive eye of 151 patient that had the limited macular tranlocation procedure for ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization between April 1996 and February 1999. The major tudy variable invetigated included the incidence of pecific ocular complication and their impact on viual acuity at 3 month after the urgery. In addition, baeline patient characteritic and operative factor were evaluated to determine whether they were ignificant rik factor for the development of an ocular complication. The exitence of a urgical procedure learning proce wa invetigated.
REULT: One hundred forty-one (92.15%) of 153 eye achieved at leat 3-month follow-up. At leat one complication occurred in 53 of 153 eye (34.6%) and in 51 of thee 53 eye (96.22%) the complication occurred before 3 month of potoperative follow-up. The intraoperative and potoperative complication included retinal detachment (17.4%), retinal break (13.4%), macular hole (7.8%), macular fold (4.6%), and intraocular hemorrhage (vitreou, ubretinal, or choroidal; 9.2%). Eye that developed retinal detachment, ubretinal hemorrhage, and macular fold had ignificantly more lo of viual acuity than eye without each of thee complication (P = .0001, P = .038, and P = .027, repectively). The preence of predominantly claic choroidal neovacularization, the occurrence of an intraoperative retinal break, any intraocular hemorrhage, or macular fold formation were ignificantly aociated with retinal detachment (P = .021, P = .025, P = .013, and P = .014, repectively). The incidence of any complication, retinal detachment, and hemorrhage ignificantly decreaed during the tudy period, uggeting a learning proce (P = .03, P = .006, P = .027, repectively).
CONCLUION: A variety of ocular complication can occur during or after limited macular tranlocation, and ome are aociated with reduced potoperative viual acuity. Improved urgical technique and experience may ignificantly reduce the incidence of thee complication.
