Abstract :
PURPOE: To invetigate the prevalence of, and potential rik factor for, emotional ditre among patient with retinal dieae.
DEIGN: Cro-ectional tudy.
METHOD: Cae conited of 86 conecutive patient at Wilmer Eye Intitute Retinal Vacular Center. Fifty-one control with normal viual acuity and no known ocular dieae were frequency-matched to the cae by age, ex, and race. ubject were interviewed uing the Community Diability cale, a functional tatu quetionnaire, and the General Health Quetionnaire, a quetionnaire aeing emotional ditre.
REULT: The prevalence of probable (General Health Quetionnaire core 4 or greater and le than 10) or definite (General Health Quetionnaire core 10 or greater) emotional ditre wa 59.3% among ophthalmic patient and 2.0% among control. There were ignificant relationhip between emotional ditre, a aeed by General Health Quetionnaire core, and degree of 1) viual impairment, a aeed by weighted bilateral average logarithm of minimal angle of reolution (logMAR), and 2) functional impairment, a aeed by Community Diability cale core (P = .001). Univariate analye identified ignificant predictor of emotional ditre: horter duration of ocular dieae (P = .019), wore viual acuity (P = .001), increaed ytemic comorbiditie (P = .001), and increaed functional impairment (P < .001). Multiple regreion analyi demontrate that wore viual acuity, increaed ytemic comorbiditie, and horter duration of ocular dieae each explain over 10% of the variability in General Health Quetionnaire core (r2 = 0.15, 0.12, and 0.11, repectively). Addition of Community Diability cale core to the regreion model eliminate the ignificance of viual acuity and ytemic comorbiditie; Community Diability cale core explain nearly 30% of the variability in emotional ditre, a aeed by General Health Quetionnaire core (r2 = 0.29).
CONCLUION: Emotional ditre i prevalent among patient with retinal dieae; potential rik factor for emotional ditre among uch patient include horter duration of ocular dieae, wore viual acuity, increaed ytemic comorbiditie, and increaed functional impairment.
