Abstract :
PURPOE: To uncover rik factor for the highly variable individual rate of progreion in cae of untreated normal-tenion glaucoma. METHOD: Viual field data were aembled from 160 ubject (160 eye) enrolled in the collaborative normal-tenion glaucoma tudy during interval in which the eye under tudy wa not receiving intraocular preure–lowering treatment during prerandomization and potrandomization interval. Analye included multivariate analyi of time-dependent Cox proportional hazard, Kaplan-Meier analyi of “urvival” without an increment of viual field worening, and comparion of lope of change in mean deviation global index over time. REULT: Mot migraine occurred in women, but analyi demontrated that gender and preence of migraine contribute eparately to the overall rik. The rik ratio for migraine, adjuted for the other variable wa 2.58 (P = .0058), for dik hemorrhage wa 2.72 (P = .0036), and for female gender 1.85 (P = .0622). The average fall in the mean deviation index wa fater in nonmigrainou women than in nonmigrainou men (P = .05). uggeting genetic influence, Aian had a lower rate of progreion (P = .005), and the few black patient enrolled had a tendency for fater progreion. However, elf-declared hitory of family with glaucoma or treated for glaucoma did not affect the rate of progreion. Neither age nor the untreated level of intraocular preure affected the rate of untreated dieae progreion, depite their known influence on prevalence. CONCLUION: Wherea rik factor for prevalence help elect population within which to creen for glaucoma, the factor that affect the rate of progreion help decide the expected prognoi of the individual’ untreated dieae and thereby the frequency of follow-up and aggreivene of the therapy to be undertaken.
