Abstract :
PURPOE: To examine the effect of baic fibroblat growth factor on induced choriocapillari atrophy in vivo. METHOD: Choriocapillari atrophy wa urgically induced in rabbit by a hydraulic retinal detachment followed by debridement of the retinal pigment epithelium under the detached retina. Three concentration of baic fibroblat growth factor (0.1 μg/0.1 ml, 1 μg/0.1 ml, or 5 μg/0.1 ml) were injected into the ubretinal pace and into the vitreou cavity 1, 3, and 5 day after the urgery. For control, only Tri buffer wa injected in the ame manner. The rabbit were euthanized 7 day after the urgery. Choroidal vacular cat were made and examined by canning electron microcopy. The choriocapillari atrophy wa quantified by computer-aited image analyi of photograph of the choriocapillarie. The area of the choriocapillari and number of intercapillary pace in the choriocapillari that correponded to the denity of the capillary network were meaured. REULT: The average area of the choriocapillari in the eye treated with 1 μg/0.1 ml of baic fibroblat growth factor wa ignificantly larger at 75.1 ± 3.0% than that in the control eye at 67.2 ± 5.6% (P = .021). The average area of the choriocapillari in the 0.1 μg/0.1 ml of baic fibroblat growth factor group wa not tatitically different from the control. The number of intercapillary pace of the choriocapillari wa 132 ± 12 in the 0.1 μg/0.1 ml of baic fibroblat growth factor group, 124 ± 46 in the 1 μg/0.1 ml of baic fibroblat growth factor group, and 75 ± 14 in the control group. The higher number of pace in the treated group wa tatitically ignificant (P = .026). CONCLUION: Baic fibroblat growth factor decreaed the atrophy of the choriocapillari after removal of the retinal pigment epithelium in rabbit eye. Thee reult ugget that baic fibroblat growth factor may play a role in the urvival of the choriocapillari in vivo.
