Abstract :
PURPOE: Alteration of ocular blood flow may play a role in the pathophyiology of human immunodeficiency viru (HIV) related retinal microvaculopathy. In thi tudy ocular blood flow wa invetigated in patient with HIV infection. DEIGN: In a propective, cro-ectional tudy ocular blood flow wa meaured in 37 eye of conecutive HIV- infected peron and compared with the data of age-matched healthy control. Thi ample ize wa calculated baed on an α-error of 0.5 and a β-error of 0.8. METHOD: Macular white blood cell flow, fundu pulation amplitude, and blood flow velocitie in the retrobulbar veel were meaured with blue field entoptic technique, laer interferometry, and Doppler onography, repectively. Immunologic and ophthalmologic tatu wa evaluated from each patient. REULT: Mean CD4+ cell count of the HIV-infected peron wa 206.8 ± 145.6 cell/mm3. In five patient HIV-related retinopathy wa oberved. A ignificant reduction in leukocyte denity wa een in HIV infected peron (82.2 ± 23.4) a compared with the control group (102.0 ± 28.4; P = .019). The reitive index in the central retinal artery wa higher in HIV infected patient (0.77 ± 0.05) a compared with the control (0.74 ± 0.04; P = .04). The other hemodynamic parameter were not different between group. No correlation of flow parameter and CD4+ cell count or HIV-related retinopathy wa oberved. CONCLUION: Decreaed macular leukocyte denity wa detected in HIV infected peron. Our tudy ugget that abnormal retinal hemodynamic in individual infected with HIV may be involved in the pathogenei of HIV-related microvaculopathy.
