Abstract
PURPOE: To report the incidence, clinical preentation, antibiotic enitivitie, and treatment outcome for endophthalmiti caued by Moraxella pecie.
METHOD: Conecutive interventional cae erie. Medical record were reviewed of all patient treated at Bacom Palmer Eye Intitute between 1991 and 2000 for endophthalmiti caued by Moraxella pecie.
REULT: Moraxella pecie were recovered from 9 patient (10 eye), or 1.3% (10 of 757) of all culture-proven bacterial endophthalmiti cae; Moraxella catarrhali wa recovered from 7 eye and Moraxella oloeni from 3. Endophthalmiti wa delayed-onet (5 month to 10 year potoperatively) and bleb-aociated in 9 eye and trauma-related in 1. All iolate were enitive to ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and the aminoglycoide, and they were reitant to vancomycin; reitance to ampicillin and trimethoprim/ulfa wa 11%. Although preenting viion wa hand motion or wore in 7 of 10 eye, all but 3 regained baeline viual acuity (including two eye in which the pot-treatment coure wa complicated by retinal detachment and one eye with coexitent traumatic injurie).
CONCLUION: Endophthalmiti caued by Moraxella pecie i uually delayed-onet and bleb-aociated. Although patient uually preent with a profound decreae in viion, the organim are enitive to mot antibiotic and, unlike mot erie of delayed-onet bleb-aociated endophthalmiti, viual outcome are generally good unle coexitent ocular morbiditie exit.
