Peritent vertical binocular diplopia after cataract urgery

PURPOE: To report the incidence of, and factor aociated with, peritent vertical diplopia after cataract urgery. DEIGN: Conecutive interventional cae erie. METHOD: Retropectively, all adult patient examined during a five year, five month period becaue of new onet peritent (>3 month) vertical binocular diplopia after cataract urgery were analyzed. All patient had their cataract urgery at the ame outpatient ophthalmic urgery center, and were referred to the author, enabling calculation of incidence. Trend in anetheia type and trabimu complication therefrom were alo aeed. Comparion wa made between ophthalmologit-adminitered retrobulbar anetheia veru anetheia taff-adminitered retrobulbar anetheia. Incidence during a period in which hyaluronidae wa not incorporated in the retrobulbar anethetic wa calculated. REULT: Peritent vertical diplopia occurred after cataract urgery in 32 (0.18%) of 17,531 eye that had cataract urgery. No patient whoe cataract urgery wa conducted with topical anetheia (3817 eye) had peritent vertical diplopia, wherea 32 (0.23%) of the 13714 eye whoe cataract urgery wa done after retrobulbar anetheia were affected. No cae of peritent potoperative diplopia were found among 7410 cataract urgery eye after retrobulbar injection given by one cataract urgeon. There wa a threefold greater number of left eye involved than right eye (P < .005). No ignificant (P > .20) increae in cae of peritent vertical diplopia wa noted during a period of hyaluronidae hortage. CONCLUION: In thi tudy, peritent binocular vertical diplopia after cataract urgery occurred in 0.23% of cae in which retrobulbar anetheia wa performed. No cae were found after topical anetheia. Occurrence may be technique-related.
