Acute effect of ldenafil ctrate (Viagra®) on intraocular preure in open-angle glaucoma

PURPOE: To ae the acute effect of ildenafil citrate (VIAGRA) on the intraocular preure (IOP) of patient with chronic open-angle glaucoma. DEIGN: Thi wa a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, croover tudy, in which 15 patient received a ingle oral doe of ildenafil 100 mg or matching placebo on two eparate occaion. METHOD: Fifteen ubject aged 63 ± 14 year (mean ± D) with bilateral chronic open-angle glaucoma were adminitered a ingle oral doe of ildenafil 100 mg or matching placebo on two eparate occaion at leat 3 day apart. IOP wa meaured in both eye by Goldmann ap-planation tonometry at baeline and then at 1–5 hour after doing. Brachial artery ytolic and diatolic blood preure were determined by phygmomanometry, and heart rate wa alo monitored at baeline and 1–5 hour after doing. REULT: Compared with placebo, no tatitically or clinically ignificant change in IOP wa detected after a ingle doe of ildenafil 100 mg (P = .20). Moreover, no ignificant change in mean ytemic blood preure (P = .12) or heart rate (P = .72) wa detected after treatment with ildenafil. CONCLUION: At the maximum therapeutic doe of 100 mg, ildenafil did not produce any ignificant acute change in IOP in men with chronic open-angle glaucoma. Thi information i of importance for patient with glaucoma receiving ildenafil for treatment of erectile dyfunction.
