Abstract :
PURPOE: To how the afety of tranplanting heet of fetal neural retina together with it retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) to patient with retiniti pigmentoa. DEIGN: Interventional cae erie. METHOD: heet of fetal neural retina and RPE were tranplanted together into the ubretinal pace near the fovea unilaterally in the eye of five patient with retiniti pigmentoa who had only light perception in both eye. The patient were followed for 6 month. The main outcome meaure were tiue typing of both donor and recipient, fluorecein angiography, multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) teting, and clinical examination. No immunouppreive medication were given. REULT: No evidence of rejection wa oberved. Up to 6 month there wa no evidence of tiue diintegration, retinal edema, or carring. There wa no change in viion both by nellen acuity and with mfERG. Growth of the tranplant wa noted in two of five patient at 6 month v. 2 week. All patient typed were HLA mimatched with donor tiue. CONCLUION: Thi tudy indicate that fetal retina can be tranplanted together with it RPE and urvive for at leat 6 month without evidence of rejection. However, no improvement in viion were oberved, poibly due to the evere retinal degeneration of the patient.
